Walmart's price match policy lets anyone ask for a price match if they find the same item being sold by a competitor at a much lower price, this works both for on-line as well as brick-and-mortar stores. If you find it Walmart will match it.
The drawback of this program comes from its regulations and exclusions, which are very vague and can sometimes lead to applications being denied. However, if you're a Walmart regular we do recommend this app, especially if you like to make your purchases in person.
There are many retailers in Canada boasting a diverse array of products at great prices. However, a lot of them don’t provide price matching. Of course, this is not the case with Walmart, which is why in this article, we'll tell you about their price match program.
As you probably know, Walmart is one of the biggest retailers in North America. What you may not know, it that it matches its competitor’s prices to help get you the best value. Here we’re going to take a look at price match policy know as Ad Match.
So without further ado, let's begin.
What Is Walmart Price Match?
As you can guess by the name, it’s a policy whereby you can get Walmart to match their prices to those of a competitor whose product is cheaper. Meaning that if a competitor has a lower price on the same item they sell, they will match it.
Their policy states: “We’re committed to providing low prices every day. On everything. So if you find a lower advertised price on an identical product, tell us and we’ll match it. Right at the register”
If you read carefully, you’ll notice that they don’t price match every item, but only “identical” ones. Which begs the question, what counts as an identical item? Well, we’ll go over that in more detail about what things you can and can’t price match late in this article.
You should know this policy works for every Walmart in North America, but in Canada, it's known as Ad Match. It works just the same, and is simply their way to guarantee their clients they will get the lowest price available. They have checked and matched about 1000 prices, with numerous customers ultimately saving more money.
So, how do they do this? How can you take advantage of the Walmart Price Match policy?
How Do I Price Match With Walmart Canada?
The Walmart Canada policy states that you can price match both in-stores and online. Although the process for this policy is slightly different in both. Let’s talk first about how you can apply for this in stores.
If you want to request an Ad Match in any Walmart store across Canada, you will have to:
- Present a valid flyer -can be printed or digital, it doesn’t matter- of any local competitor to a Walmart Associate while at checkout.
- Wait for the Walmart Associate to decide if the item can be matched. If it doesn’t, then they will match the price right there and then.
It’s that simple to request a price match at Walmart Canada whenever you find the same item cheaper somewhere else. As long as you have your flyer with you, you should be fine.

How Do I Price Match In Walmart Online?
Walmart Price Match can also work online, in case you’re doing any grocery shopping from your phone or your computer. If you want to request an Ad Match online, you’ll have to:
- Complete the Ad Match Form.
- Remember to include a link to the digital flyer where you saw the lowest price. Obviously, you can’t request an ad match with a printed copy of the flyer.
- Wait for your request to go through their Customer Service team (Walmart doesn’t state how much this can take).
If possible, we recommend you to do this directly at checkout, instead of using the online option. When you request the Ad Match in-store, you have more flexibility for using this policy, because you can also use physical flyers that might not be on the internet.
Walmart Price Match: What Counts?
Like we previously mentioned, Walmart is really specific about what items they can price match and what items they cannot. However, they aren’t explicit regarding the whole policy. Let me explain.
They don’t specify who their “local competitors” are, they just state they will determine who they are and if the identical item you want to price match qualifies or not. They also state that only items sold and shipped by Walmart themselves are eligible for Ad Match. Therefore, their price match is not eligible for refurbished or used items, items on clearance sales, promotions or discounts, competitor's misprints, or withdrawn advertisement.
To put it shortly, there is a lot of room for interpretation about what regular customers can Ad Match or not. It ultimately depends on the Walmart assistant that assists you at checkout and what they decide.
Does Walmart Price Match Work In All Of Canada?
Yes, Walmart price match works all through Canada in every store they currently have, and you can ask for it at checkout in any store. Although this isn’t stated on their website, they did clarify it through their official Facebook page. So, no matter where you are in Canada you can take advantage of this policy, and hopefully save more money.
Walmart Price Match vs Canadian Tire
Although both Walmart and Canadian Tire have the option to lower their prices on identical items to match their competitor’s prices, they do so in different ways.
On one hand, Walmart Price Match Policy focuses on lowering the price to match the offer made by a direct competitor. Meaning you will get the same identical product for the same price.

Meanwhile, Canadian Tire Price Match policy is a little bit different. Yes, they also match the lowest price on any identical item being sold by a direct competitor, but they’ll also give you 10% off in Canadian Tire Money (their loyalty program).
That being said, the Walmart price match policy does apply to online purchases (it might take longer, but it works nonetheless), while Canadian Tire only lets you price match with purchases made in-store.
Keep in mind both of these policies are strict, and have conditions that apply to what you can and can’t price match. However, we find the Walmart policy to be much more flexible than Canadian Tire’s Price Match.
The Policy Matters
To put things short, if you meet the requirements you can price match at any Walmart store in Canada. This might not always be approved, and it’s entirely up to the judgment of the Walmart Associate. But in general, you shouldn’t have any problem applying for an Ad Match.
Is it worth trying? We would say yes, but it’s probably better if you apply in-store, as it’ll be almost certainly quicker than online.
