Who Is It For?

LEARN academy helps non-coders in San Diego learn about web development. Students need to be at least 18 years old by the first class’s date to apply and aren’t required to have any experience or a college degree and can have many different backgrounds. However, LEARN academy’s courses are full-time commitments, and all students are expected to be in class from 9 to 5, Monday through Friday and guarantee a full-time internship for the last month of the course.

Internships provide a unique opportunity to launch students' careers, and it’s a great opportunity for those who lack much working experience.

Features & Benefits

Here are a few of the most important features and benefits of LEARN academy:

Well-Aligned Incentives

LEARN academy offers various discounts, scholarships, and payment plans and accepts upfront payments from its students.

When it comes to payment plans, they have partnerships with:

  • Meritize allows students to defer payments for up to 3 months after graduation and uses their achievements to improve their loan options.
  • Stride offers a Deferred Tuition Agreement (DTA) that allows students to start paying for tuition once they are earning at least $30,000 per year.
  • SkillsFund gives loans and offers two payment plans: no payments until three months after graduation or low, interest-only payments until three months after graduation.

They offer a $4,000 scholarship for students who identify as female for the course that starts on April 19th, 2021, called Women Coding Scholarship. And offer a variety of discounts:

  • Diversity Discount: for those who are part of an underrepresented community.

  • Military Discount: for veterans who join the course.
  • Computer Science Degree Discount: for those who already have a degree in computer science.

No Experience Needed

LEARN academy’s Full-Stack Web Development Bootcamp doesn’t require students to have any prior coding experience. However, for those who feel like they should have a little more knowledge on the basics or aren’t sure if this is the right career path for them, they offer Jumpstart.

Jumpstart’s course curriculum is designed to teach the basics of web development in three days and help their students figure out if this is the right path for them or not.

Mentorship

LEARN academy keeps a 10 to 1 student-teacher ratio, so there will always be one teacher for every ten students with a top number of 3 teachers per class. This way, each of their students can get all the help they need throughout their learning process.

They also guarantee an internship in which students have the chance to work hand in hand with some of San Diego’s best developers. This is a great opportunity to learn from experienced software engineers and learn how the industry works and their expectations.

Lifetime Benefits

LEARN academy’s customized curriculum is available to all of its graduates for life. They can reference it whenever they need to refresh some of the topics learned or review all of the course’s content if they need to. This helps all content to stay fresh in their minds well after graduating from any of their programs.

Graduates can also ask for help from their career coaches whenever they need to. It doesn’t matter if they graduated yesterday or five years ago. LEARN academy has a lifetime commitment to helping its students be at the top of their game during their job search.

Guaranteed Internship

During LEARN academy’s Full-Stack Web Development Bootcamp, one of the four months is dedicated to an internship. This internship is done with some big and small tech companies in San Diego like Ceatus Media Group, Edge, EVT and MK Decision.

Internships allow students to launch their careers with critical programming experience within a real-world environment. It also grants their students a better understanding of what it’s like to work with a team and allows them to be mentored by some of the best in the industry.

Students get a chance to learn how to work with internal projects and clients. It allows them to start creating a network of contacts within the industry, which could help them land a job in the future, granting them an opportunity to show all they are capable of and maybe get hired by the company they are doing their internships in.

Job Search Assistance

LEARN academy has a full week of their Full-Stack Web Development Bootcamp dedicated to preparing their students for internships and career transitions. During this week, alumni work hand in hand with their career services manager to revise their application materials. This will also help students meet important community members and contacts from San Diego’s tech industry, which will be a big help when searching for a job once they graduate.

All students will receive help with:

  • Assembling a Portfolio
  • Elevator Pitch
  • Interview Techniques
  • Networking
  • Online Tech Presence
  • Salary Negotiations
  • Tech interview skills
  • Tech Resume/Portfolio
  • Tech Talks

LEARN academy also has a 1-month internship within their Full-Stack Web Development Bootcamp where 81% of the companies participating are looking to hire its participants. Through this guaranteed coding internship, 33% of bootcamp graduates get hired.

An In-Depth Look At Every Course

LEARN academy offers two courses: Jumpstart and Full-Stack Web Developer Bootcamp. The first is a dive into web development basics that covers HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and the second is a full-stack curriculum that includes front-end and back-end coding.

Jumpstart

LEARN academy’s Jumpstart curriculum is designed to teach students the fundamentals of web development in three days. This program helps all their students figure out what their next steps should be if they decide to continue through this career path.

Jumpstart is also meant to help those who know they want to follow this career path but lack the basic knowledge required to start a full-stack web development education.

What does the program teach?

LEARN academy’s Jumpstart program will concentrate on teaching their students the following coding languages:

  • Hypertext Markup Language, also known as HTML, is the standard markup language used in building applications and web pages.
  • Cascading Style Sheets, also known as CSS, is a style sheet language used for describing how a document written in a markup language will look.
  • JavaScript is used to make your web page dynamic and interactive.

With this knowledge, all students will complete the program with their own fully-coded website.

In-House Full-Stack Web Developer Bootcamp

LEARN academy’s Full-Stack Web Developer Bootcamp curriculum is designed to teach students how to work on both front and back-end development. The program will train alumni to build web applications from scratch. The Full-stack Web Developer Bootcamp is meant to teach the most in-demand coding languages to give their students a strong foundation to start building their programming careers.

The program’s curriculum is flexible and hosted in GitHub. Classes adapt to each cohort’s specific needs, and its hosting allows students to learn by doing, which grants the necessary experience with source code management and version control.

The school has a four step map of what the four months look like:

Step 1, full-stack training. Students spend the first three months learning how to code to create web applications with front and back-end web development from scratch.

Step 2, coding internship. During the fourth month, students are guaranteed an internship with a tech company. This internship will last a month.

Step 3, career coaching. Students will receive resume training and spend a week learning how to boost their LinkedIn profile, how to write cover letters and other useful skills geared towards landing their first job in the tech industry.

Step 4, career launch. LEARN academy's career services manager will work with students and help them create a career searching plan.

What does the program teach?

LEARN academy’s Full-Stack Developer Bootcamp program teaches students front and back-end web development.

The front-end coding of a web page is everything a user can see and interact with within the website. For this, all students will learn:

  • Hypertext Markup Language, also known as HTML, is the standard markup language used in building applications and web pages.
  • Cascading Style Sheets, also known as CSS, is a style sheet language used for describing how a document written in a markup language will look.
  • JavaScript is used to make your web page dynamic and interactive.
  • React, a powerful Javascript library that is used to build more complicated web applications.

The back-end coding of a web page is all about the functionality that happens behind the scenes. For this, all students will learn:

  • Ruby. This is a backend, object-oriented programming language.
  • Ruby on Rails, a server-side web application framework, written in Ruby under the MIT License. It is a model–view–controller framework that provides default structures for databases, web services, and websites.
  • PostgreSQL, a free, open-source relational database management system that emphasizes extensibility and SQL compliance.

This is how a typical day in the 16 Week Program looks:

9:00 amStand-Up begins.
9:30 amQuickly review concepts from the previous day.
9:40 amGroup discussions, live coding demos, coding challenge breakouts, and group questions.
10:30 amPair up and start working on coding challenges.
12:00 pmLunch break.
1:00 pmStart on the coding challenges for the day.
4:00 pmLive coding demos.
4:30 pmAssessment of the day’s topics and preparing for the next day.
5:00 pmWrap-up.

Relevant Information About the Course

As with the Jumpstart program, LEARN academy keeps a 10 to 1 student-teacher ratio, so there will always be one teacher for every ten students with a top number of 3 teachers per class.

About 81% of the companies participating in this program are looking to hire students within the internship, and 33% of bootcamp graduates are hired through this guaranteed coding internship. Internships are also an excellent way for students to gain professional experience in web development since it provides:

  • Real-world programming experience within a development team.
  • Train with some of the best developers in the industry as mentors.
  • On-the-job training with projects and clients.
  • Gaining great skills and relationships.
  • An opportunity to be hired by the company.

How does the internship process work?

LEARN academy’s internship’s process has three steps:

Step 1: Company presentations. In this step, partner companies will share their history, goals, and details about the internship opportunity with each class. These presentations will have a Q&A section so that students can ask any questions they may have.

Step 2: Internship interview. Students will then have interviews with three or four of those companies they are interested in, which will also be good practice for job hunting.

Step 3: Matching process. Students will be asked to rank companies from their favourite to their least favourite, and companies will be asked to rank students as well. LEARN academy will then take all this information and make the matches so that everyone is satisfied with their placement.

Job Placement & Career Support

LEARN academy works with its students to develop all of the skills needed to succeed in the tech industry. Besides the know-how in coding, this also entails things like technical interviewing, career management and networking skills. To do this, students receive:

Career Coaching Students are taught by their career services manager all of the networking skills needed to get a job.

LEARN academy is located in the historic, central district of East Village, San Diego. They have a campus that is approximately 4,500 square feet and are equipped with two classrooms with a capacity of 24 students each, restrooms and both students and staff lounge areas.

The school provides instruction for its courses with up-to-date equipment, which means students don’t need to take their laptops to class. It’s conveniently close to transportation hubs and major roads and has dozens of restaurants and tourist spots nearby.

Costs, Payment Plans & Scholarships

LEARN academy's Jumpstart and Full-Stack Web Developer programs have two fixed prices.

Jumpstart$249
In-House Full-Stack Web Developer Bootcamp$14,500

LEARN academy offers a couple of options when it comes to funding. They have scholarships, discounts and loans, and they also accept up-front payments. Here are a couple of their options:

Payment Plans

Meritize

For students who can’t afford to pay for tuition up-front, LEARN academy offers the possibility of applying for a loan through a financing partnership they have with Meritize. Once a student’s loan is approved, the school will reach out with information about the following steps in their admissions process.

Meritize uses a student's previous academics, work or military achievements to improve their loan options. This can particularly help students who lack a co-borrower, and the program allows the deferring of payments for up to 3 months after graduation.

Stride

Students can also apply for a Deferred Tuition Agreement (DTA) through Stride, which will allow them to pay a small upfront deposit until they get a job. This is an alternative to up-front payment and taking a loan.

With a DTA, students pay a $1,500 deposit and then a $345 monthly fee for the next 48 months (4 years) that they won’t need to pay until they’ve graduated and are earning at least or more than $2,500 per month ($30,000 per year). DTA advantages include:

  • No accruing interest, even when the student is still in school and hasn’t paid.
  • No hidden fees.
  • A total duration of 4 years.
  • Grace periods and automatic deferrals when unemployed or making less than $30,000.

SkillsFund

With SkillsFund, students are offered the ability to defer payments until they graduate. Application takes only a couple of minutes, and after a loan is approved, the school gets in touch with the student to inform about the next steps to take. SkillsFund takes your credit score into account to determine a student’s eligibility for the loan, and adding a co-signer is an option. SkillsFund offers two payment options:

  • No payments until three months after graduation
  • Low, interest-only payments until three months after graduation.
Tuition loan amount$2,000 to $14,000
Interest rate6.5% to 13.75%
Monthly repayment planInterest payments during schoolNo payments in school
Loan term36 or 60 months

With a full tuition loan and a 6.5% interest, the total cost of the course would be $16,777.

Scholarships and Discounts

It’s important to note that each student is eligible for only one of the following scholarships or discounts.

Women Coding Scholarship

Until March 2021, all students who identify as female are eligible for a $4,000 scholarship for LEARN academy’s Full-Stack Web Developer program beginning on April 19th, 2021.

Diversity Discount

For students who identify with an underrepresented community, LEARN academy offers a $2,000 discount.

College Degree Discount

For students who have a bachelor’s degree or higher and feel the need for a career restart, LEARN academy offers a $2,000 discount.

Military Discount

For students who are military veterans, in honour of those who have served the United States, LEARN academy offers a $2,000 discount.

Computer Science Degree Discount

Students who have a computer science degree and feel like LEARN academy’s real-world coding experience can aid in stepping up their game. They offer a $4,000 discount.

How To Apply

LEARN academy has a simple two-step application process:

Step 1: Fill in the application form. This helps the school understand who you are, how far along you are in your learning journey, and your goals.

Step 2: Application Interview. The school deepens their understanding of the application form’s information—trying to assess if theirs is the right program for you and if they can help you accomplish your goals.

To LEARN academy, students aren’t just numbers, so applying is a personal process. They want to get to know you before they help you start your journey into a new career.

LEARN Academy Reviews

“After three months of classroom instruction, I was successfully contributing to an agile development team at a tech company in San Diego… LEARN is the most well-rounded and experienced resource available in the San Diego area to place your faith in to prepare you for a successful life-changing career pivot.” Rudy Becker

“LEARN Academy is such a great Bootcamp. The way this Bootcamp is run makes learning fun, easy, and stress-free.” April Rieger

“Attending LEARN Academy was one of the best, most satisfying decisions I've ever made for the growth of my career… Learning on your own can be done, but can take two years when a person could attend a good bootcamp and get it done in 3 months and pay it off before those ‘would of been two years' are over, and now you have a job and experience already before you would of gotten your first job.” Joshua Cumpian

“There is absolutely so much to learn when you are just getting started in web development, and I thought Learn did a great job easing into it the first two weeks and then going full force. It was extremely challenging and takes full-time dedication… I definitely recommend this bootcamp, but only if you are willing to go in 100%. You get what you put in.” Veronica Basch

I loved it, and though I am still on my journey to become a software developer, I know in my brain and in my heart that it was the right decision for me.” — Bryan Oster

“Going the LEARN was the best decision! I highly recommend LEARN if you want to go somewhere where you will be more than just a number. You will be a part of a great community! ” — Lea Ann Bradford
