Best Credit Cards in Canada for 2026

There’s no single best credit card. The right one depends on where you spend, whether you travel, and whether you ever carry a balance. Tell us roughly what you spend each month and we’ll rank these 20 Canadian cards by what they’re actually worth to you, after the annual fee.

We may earn a commission when you apply through some links on this page. “Our ranking” also weighs our partnerships and whether a card’s application link works; choose “Best value for my spending” to rank by the numbers alone. How we make money.

Side by side

How we compare cards

We read every card’s terms on the issuer’s own website: the annual fee, the earn rates and their limits, the welcome offer, the interest rates and the income required. Each card shows the date we last checked it and a link to the issuer’s page.

The “worth to you” number is what the rewards on your spending would be worth in a year, minus the annual fee. Year 1 also counts the welcome offer. We value points at what you’d get when you redeem them the simple way:

  • Cash back is worth its face value.
  • Scene+, RBC Avion, WestJet, National Bank and CT Money points are each worth 1¢.
  • PC Optimum points are worth 0.1¢, so 10 points equals 1¢.
  • Aeroplan points are worth 1.5¢, a conservative figure for flights booked with points.

Welcome offers are valued the same way: bonus points multiplied by our value, plus any first-year fee rebate. Issuers often advertise a bigger “up to” figure because they value their points more highly.

Card companies pay us for some links. Partner offers are paid placements and are marked “Partner offer”. The default order, “Our ranking”, starts from the numbers above and also weighs our partnerships and whether a card’s application link is working. Sort by “Best value for my spending” to rank on the numbers alone.

Common questions

What’s the best credit card in Canada?

It depends on how you spend. For most households, a card that pays 3–5% on groceries and gas is worth the most, such as the CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite, BMO CashBack World Elite or Scotiabank Momentum Visa Infinite. If you don’t want to pay an annual fee, the Tangerine Money-Back card is hard to beat. Enter your own spending in the tool above to see your ranking.

Is a card with an annual fee worth it?

It’s worth it only if the extra rewards are bigger than the fee. On a $120–$150 card that earns about 2% more than a no-fee card, you’d need to spend at least $500–$600 a month in its bonus categories to come out ahead. The tool does this sum for you.

What income do I need for a Visa Infinite or World Elite card?

Most Visa Infinite cards ask for $60,000 in personal income or $100,000 in household income. Most World Elite Mastercards ask for $80,000 personal or $150,000 household. Use the “My income” filter to show only the cards you can apply for.

What is a foreign transaction fee?

Most Canadian cards add about 2.5% to anything you buy in another currency, including online purchases from U.S. stores. On $3,000 of travel spending, that’s $75. Cards with no foreign transaction fee skip that charge. Choose “No foreign currency fee” above to see them.

Will applying for a card hurt my credit score?

An application usually causes a “hard” credit check. That can lower your score by a few points for a short time. Applying for several cards in a few months has a bigger effect, so apply for the one card you want most.

What if I sometimes carry a balance?

At 20–22% interest, carrying a balance costs far more than any card earns in rewards. If you often carry one, a low-rate card such as the MBNA True Line Mastercard (12.99%) will save you more than rewards would earn. Pay it off, then switch to a rewards card.

I have no credit history. Which card can I get?

A secured card is the usual first step. You leave a refundable deposit, which becomes your credit limit, and on-time payments are reported to the credit bureaus. After 6–12 months of on-time payments, many people qualify for a regular no-fee card.
