Don’t recognize a deposit?
- Check the deposit's date and amount against the benefit payment calendar on canada.ca. Many federal benefits have fixed dates (CPP/OAS near month-end, CCB around the 20th, CGEB on the 5th of Jan/Apr/Jul/Oct, OTB around the 10th).
- Sign in to CRA My Account. Under 'Benefits and credits' you can see each CRA benefit's payment dates and amounts; 'Accounts and payments' shows refunds and your notice of assessment.
- Sign in to My Service Canada Account for payments from Employment Insurance, CPP, OAS/GIS and the Canada Disability Benefit.
- CRA benefits and credits enquiries: 1-800-387-1193. For CCB and ACFB, wait 5 working days after the payment date before calling about a missing payment; for other CRA benefits, wait 10 working days.
- CRA individual tax enquiries (refunds, direct deposit): 1-800-959-8281.
- CPP and OAS/GIS: 1-800-277-9914 (TTY 1-800-255-4786), Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
- Employment Insurance: 1-800-206-7218 (TTY 1-800-529-3742).
- Canada Disability Benefit: 1-833-486-3007 (TTY 1-833-467-2700).
- For provincial payments (ODSP, Ontario Works, AISH, BC assistance, Manitoba EIA, Saskatchewan SIS/SAID, Quebec), contact the provincial program. Examples: Manitoba EIA 1-855-944-8111; Saskatchewan Social Services 1-866-221-5200. BC recipients can check My Self Serve.
- Ask your bank for the full transaction details. Many banks show the originator name and a 3-digit Payments Canada code or its abbreviation (e.g. CCB, OAS, RIT, FPT, PRO), which identifies the payment type.
- Don't spend a deposit you can't explain, and don't send money back to anyone who contacts you about it. Contact the paying agency yourself using a number from canada.ca or the province's official site; if it was paid in error, the agency will tell you how to repay.
Is it a scam?
- The CRA will not send refunds or payments by e-transfer or text message. Real refunds and benefits arrive by direct deposit or cheque.
- The CRA will not demand or pressure immediate payment by Interac e-Transfer, cryptocurrency, prepaid credit cards or gift cards, and does not accept payment in cryptocurrency.
- The CRA will not threaten to deport or arrest you, or ask for personal or financial information in a voicemail or email.
- To check that a contact is genuine, hang up and call using a number from canada.ca, and type official addresses into your browser instead of clicking links. Real CRA sites use canada.ca or cra-arc.gc.ca.
- Service Canada / the Government of Canada won't ask for personal or financial information by email, and won't leave personal information on an answering machine.
- 'Accidental deposit' scam pattern: someone says they sent you a government payment by mistake and asks you to e-transfer it back. Government agencies don't recover payments this way; check in CRA My Account or My Service Canada Account first. (This scam pattern is our editorial summary; the linked CRA page supports only the e-transfer point.)
- Report scams to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre: 1-888-495-8501 or antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
