On this page

The Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) helps adults with a disability in Ontario pay for food, rent and health costs. It pays once a month, on the last business day, and that money is for the month ahead. Rates are tied to inflation and went up 1.9% on July 1, 2026.

How much ODSP pays in 2026

Your payment has two parts. Basic needs is a set amount for food, clothing and other costs. Shelter covers your actual rent or housing costs, up to a limit. These are the most you can get from July 1, 2026.

Your familyBasic needsShelter (up to)Monthly maximum
Single person$825$611$1,436
Couple, one person has a disability$1,189$959$2,148
Couple, both have a disability$1,644$959$2,603
Single parent, one child under 18$825 + $143 parent supplement$959$1,927

Children under 18 don’t add to basic needs. The shelter limit grows with family size, up to $1,259 for six or more people.

Example: A single person paying $900 a month in rent gets the full $1,436. A single person paying $500 gets $825 plus $500, or $1,325.

Extras such as the Remote Communities Allowance or a special diet allowance can add to this. Board-and-lodging rates are different.

When the money arrives

ODSP pays on the last business day of the month, and that payment is for the next month. So the deposit on September 29 is your October money. Ontario Works uses the same schedule for most months.

December is the exception. In 2025, the December payment arrived on December 22. Ontario hasn’t confirmed the December 2026 date yet, and the calendar at the top of this page will show it once it does. An early December payment means a longer wait until the end of January, so plan for it.

The Canada Disability Benefit won’t reduce your ODSP

The federal Canada Disability Benefit pays up to $204.20 a month from July 2026 to June 2027. Ontario says it “will not affect your eligibility for ODSP or the amount of your payment.” You keep all of it.

To get it, you must be 18 to 64, be approved for the Disability Tax Credit, and have filed your 2025 tax return (and your spouse’s, if you have one). Apply online, in person or at 1-833-486-3007. It pays on the third Thursday of each month. See our Canada Disability Benefit payment dates.

Working while on ODSP

  • You can earn up to $1,000 a month (after deductions) without any cut to your ODSP.
  • Above $1,000, ODSP is reduced by 75 cents for each dollar. You keep 25 cents.
  • A spouse without a disability, or an adult child who isn’t in school full time, can earn $200 a month with no cut. Above that, ODSP is reduced by 50 cents per dollar.
  • You can get a Work-Related Benefit of up to $100 a month for each family member who earns money from a job or training program.
  • If you leave ODSP for a job, you can get a $500 Employment Transition Benefit once in 12 months, and your health benefits may continue.
  • Report your earnings by the 7th of the next month, in MyBenefits or by phone.

Example: A single person gets the $1,436 maximum and earns $1,400 in one month. The first $1,000 doesn’t count. On the other $400, ODSP is cut by $300. That leaves $1,136 from ODSP, plus the $1,400 pay and the $100 Work-Related Benefit.

CPP Disability and ODSP together

You can get both. CPP Disability counts as income, so ODSP is reduced dollar for dollar and tops up the rest. For example, a single person getting $800 a month from CPP Disability can get up to $636 from ODSP.

If you already get CPP Disability, you don’t have to go through ODSP’s separate disability review. You still have to meet the income and asset rules. See our CPP payment dates.

Who qualifies

  • You’re 18 or older (you can start applying six months before your 18th birthday).
  • You live in Ontario.
  • You’re in financial need.
  • You have a substantial physical or mental impairment expected to last a year or more, which limits your ability to work, look after yourself or take part in community life.
  • Your non-exempt assets are no more than $40,000 (single) or $50,000 (couple).

Assets, gifts and savings

The $40,000 and $50,000 limits cover all your countable assets together, not just your bank balance. Some things don’t count at all:

  • The home you own and live in, and your main vehicle
  • A Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) or a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP)
  • Trusts from an inheritance or life insurance, plus the cash value of life insurance, up to $100,000 combined
  • Gifts, inheritances and voluntary payments of up to $10,000 in any 12 months

How to apply

  1. Apply online (about 20 to 30 minutes), by phone at 1-888-999-1142, or at your local ODSP office.
  2. A caseworker checks your income and assets first.
  3. You get a Disability Determination Package for your health care provider to fill in. You have 90 days to send it back. Doctors bill OHIP for it, so you don’t pay.
  4. If you need money while you wait, you can apply for Ontario Works at the same time. See our Ontario Works guide.

ODSP also covers prescription drugs, dental care, eye exams and glasses, medical transportation, and medical supplies and equipment.

What changed in 2026

  • ODSP rose 1.9% on July 1, 2026. It is now raised each July to match inflation.
  • The Canada Disability Benefit rose to $204.20 a month in July. A one-time $150 supplement, to help with the cost of getting the Disability Tax Credit, was paid on September 17 to people who got the benefit between July 2025 and June 2026.
  • The next ODSP increase is expected in July 2027. Ontario hasn’t announced the amount.

Turning 65 on ODSP

At 65, you must apply for Old Age Security. OAS and the Guaranteed Income Supplement count as income and are taken off your ODSP dollar for dollar. See our guides to OAS and GIS.

Payment late, missing or different?

  1. Sign in to MyBenefits to see your payment details and any messages.
  2. Check that your bank account and address are up to date.
  3. If the amount changed, check whether you reported earnings, CPP or other income for last month. That lowers the next payment.
  4. Call the Social Assistance Support Line at 1-888-999-1142 (TTY 1-800-387-5559), Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Have your nine-digit member ID ready. It’s on your monthly statement.

Ontario doesn’t set a number of days to wait, so call if your money isn’t there on the payment date. Watch for scams. ODSP never asks for fees, gift cards or passwords by text or email.

Common questions

Is ODSP going up in 2026?

It already did. ODSP rose 1.9% on July 1, 2026, and a single person can now get up to $1,436 a month. Rates go up with inflation each July.

Is the Canada Disability Benefit clawed back from ODSP?

No. Ontario fully exempts it, so it doesn’t change your ODSP amount or your eligibility.

Can I get CPP Disability and ODSP at the same time?

Yes. ODSP is reduced by the amount of your CPP Disability and pays the difference.

How much money can I have in the bank on ODSP?

Up to $40,000 in countable assets if you’re single, or $50,000 for a couple. Your home, main car and RDSP don’t count.

When is the December 2026 ODSP payment?

Ontario hasn’t confirmed it yet. December payments may come earlier than the last business day. The calendar at the top of this page will update when the date is announced.
