How TopCashback works
Online stores pay websites a commission for sending them shoppers. TopCashback says it passes 100% of that commission to you as cash back, and makes its own money from ads and from bonuses some retailers pay it.
- Sign in to TopCashback.
- Search for the store and click through using the main button on the store’s page. Links in sponsored ads don’t earn cash back.
- Buy online in the same visit.
- Your cash back shows up in your account within about 7 days as pending.
- After the store’s return period ends and it confirms the sale, the cash back becomes confirmed and then payable. TopCashback says this can take 30 days or more.
If you return the item or the order is cancelled, you lose the cash back on it.
How it works from Canada
TopCashback runs local sites in the U.S., the U.K., Australia and several European and Asian countries, but not in Canada. Its U.S. terms say the site is aimed at Americans and pays cash back in U.S. dollars only, though most retailers accept purchases from Canada.
A few things follow from that:
- Shop the Canada section. The “Canada Retailers” category lists stores that deliver to Canada, such as Walmart Canada, Best Buy Canada and Sephora Canada.
- Some U.S. stores won’t pay you. TopCashback warns that some merchants won’t ship outside the U.S., or won’t pay cash back on orders from outside the U.S. A store’s page may not say so.
- Bonus offers are open to you. TopCashback’s terms say its free cash back offers are available to members in the U.S. and Canada.

“Up to” means only some products or categories earn the top rate. Each store has exclusions too. For example, Best Buy Canada doesn’t pay cash back on gift cards.
Example: a $300 hotel booked through Expedia Canada at 6% earns about $18 in cash back, and the same $300 at Best Buy Canada’s 2% earns about $6. TopCashback credits your account in U.S. dollars, so the exact amount depends on the exchange rate it uses.
Getting paid
Once cash back is payable, you choose when to cash out. There’s no minimum. To cash out:
- Choose “Cash Out” from your account menu.
- Confirm your email address and answer your security question. You can’t be paid until your email is confirmed.
- Add your PayPal details. Adding or changing payment details puts a 72-hour security hold on your account, so do this early.
- Confirm the payment.
Bank transfers (ACH) are only for U.S. bank accounts, so Canadians use PayPal. TopCashback’s terms say members outside the U.S. pay any cost PayPal charges to convert U.S. dollars. PayPal Canada’s fee page lists a currency conversion fee of 3% to 4% above its base exchange rate. Check PayPal’s current fees before you convert.
Fees and fine print
- No membership fee. TopCashback says it doesn’t charge sign-up or membership fees “at any time”.
- Log in at least every six months. Accounts can be closed as dormant otherwise, and cash back in a closed account is lost.
- One account per person. Multiple accounts lead to termination.
- Final amounts can differ. You’re credited with what the store actually reports, which may be more or less than the advertised rate. Some stores pay on the total with tax and shipping, others don’t.
- Missing cash back needs a claim. If a purchase doesn’t track, you can file a claim. Best Buy Canada, for example, asks for claims within 100 days of the order.

- Keep your order confirmation until the cash back is paid.
Who TopCashback suits
It’s worth it if you already buy online from stores on its Canadian list, book travel online, or make a few big purchases a year, and you have (or don’t mind opening) a PayPal account. It’s less useful if you mostly shop in person, or only buy small amounts online, since conversion costs take a bigger bite from small payouts.
Cash back sites work best alongside a rewards credit card: you can earn from both on the same purchase. Just don’t buy something only to get the cash back.
