The Newfoundland and Labrador Home Heating Supplement Program (Furnace and Stove Oil) pays $200 to $500 to households that heat their main home with furnace or stove oil. For the 2026 program, your household’s adjusted family net income for 2025 must be $150,000 or less, and you must buy at least 250 litres of oil during 2026. Applications are open now and close on January 15, 2027.
The program runs by calendar year. The 2026 program covers oil bought from January 1 to December 31, 2026. The province opened applications on July 16, 2026. All figures here are for the 2026 program, as of September 2026.
How much you can get
| 2025 adjusted family net income | 2026 supplement |
|---|---|
| $100,000 or less | $500 (the maximum) |
| Over $100,000 up to $150,000 | Partial supplement, at least $200 |
| Over $150,000 | Not eligible, unless a special circumstance below applies |
The province does not publish the exact formula for the partial amount. If your income is between $100,000 and $150,000, you will get at least $200.
Only one person per household can apply.
Who qualifies
You can get the 2026 supplement if:
- you live in Newfoundland and Labrador
- you pay for furnace or stove oil to heat your principal residence in the province
- you bought at least 250 litres of furnace or stove oil between January 1 and December 31, 2026
- your adjusted family net income for 2025 was $150,000 or less
- you have filed your 2025 income tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
How income is counted
Adjusted family net income is your net income (line 23600 of your tax return) plus the net income of your spouse or common-law partner, if you have one.
Special circumstances
You may still qualify if your 2025 income was over $150,000 and one of these applies:
- Death of a spouse: if your spouse had income in 2025 and died in 2026, only your income counts. You need a copy of the death certificate and your spouse’s Social Insurance Number.
- Divorce or separation: if you filed your 2025 return as married or common-law and separated or divorced in 2026, only your income counts. You need proof of the separation or divorce.
- Long-term care: if your spouse lives in a long-term care facility, you can subtract what you pay the facility for their care. You need a signed statement from the facility.
- Adult Basic Education or skills training: if you got government funding in 2025 for Adult Basic Education or skills development and it was on your 2025 tax return, you can subtract it. You need a course enrolment letter and your 2025 T4E.
Who is not eligible
If heat is included in your rent, or you live in a fully subsidized Newfoundland and Labrador Housing unit, you are not eligible unless you can show invoices for at least 250 litres of furnace or stove oil.
The program only covers furnace and stove oil. Other ways of heating, such as electric heat, do not count.
How to apply
- Collect your oil invoices. They must be in your name or your spouse’s name, show your delivery address, and add up to at least 250 litres bought between January 1 and December 31, 2026.
- Make sure your 2025 tax return has been filed. The province cannot process your application without it.
- Apply through the province’s Home Heating Supplement Program page, which links to the online portal.
- Double-check your Social Insurance Number and date of birth, and sign the application. On a paper form, if you filed your 2025 return as married or common-law, both of you must sign.
- Add any documents for special circumstances.
- Submit by January 15, 2027. Late applications are not accepted.
If you cannot use the online portal, mail your application and documents to:
Home Heating Supplement Program, Department of Finance, P.O. Box 8700, St. John’s, NL A1B 4J6
You can print the 2026 application form. For questions, call 709-729-4645 or toll-free 1-844-729-4645, or email [email protected].
When to apply
You can apply as soon as you have invoices for 250 litres bought in 2026. If you have not bought that much yet, wait until you have, but do not miss the January 15, 2027 deadline.
When it’s paid
The province says most applications are processed within 10 weeks of arriving at the Department of Finance, depending on how many applications it receives.
- If you get your tax refund or GST/HST credit by direct deposit from the CRA, the supplement goes into that same bank account.
- Otherwise, you get a cheque. Cash it within 6 months, or it becomes stale-dated and has to be reissued.
Things to watch for
- Not enough oil on your invoices. You need at least 250 litres dated in 2026. Invoices from 2025 do not count toward the 2026 program.
- Invoices in someone else’s name. They must be in your name or your spouse’s name, with the delivery address.
- Missing signature or wrong SIN. The province asks applicants to check these to avoid delays. Incomplete applications may be returned.
- Unfiled taxes. File your 2025 return first.
- Missing the deadline. January 15, 2027 is firm.
- Scams. No government asks for a payment or gift cards to release a benefit. See the scams page.
If you heat with electricity or another fuel, this program will not help, but other benefits might. Try the benefits checkup, and check the deadlines page for other dates coming up.
