The Island Essentials Benefit (IEB) is a new Prince Edward Island payment to help with the cost of groceries, gas and utilities. It started in July 2026 and replaces the PEI Sales Tax Credit. Unlike the old credit, every eligible Islander gets something, whatever their income. It’s paid automatically by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). In 2026, most payments arrive in the same deposit as the federal Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB).
How much you’ll get
Your yearly amount depends on your net income and whether you’re single, or part of a couple or a single-parent family.
| Who | Net income up to $95,000 | Higher incomes |
|---|---|---|
| Single person | $310 (the maximum) | Reduced as income rises, never below $175 |
| Couple or single parent | $365 (the maximum) | Reduced as income rises, never below $175 |
Example 1: A single senior with a net income of $28,000 gets the maximum $310 for the year.
Example 2: A single mother with a net income of $60,000 gets the maximum $365, because single parents get the family amount.
Example 3: A couple with a high net income still gets the $175 minimum, paid in one lump sum in November 2026.
If your income is between the full and minimum levels, the province calculates a prorated amount between $175 and the maximum.
When it’s paid in 2026
In its first year, the IEB is paid on different schedules depending on your amount:
- If you get the maximum: quarterly payments starting in July 2026, on the CRA schedule. These come in the same deposit as your CGEB.
- If you get less than the maximum but more than $175: three payments, in July, October and November 2026.
- If you get only the $175 minimum: one payment in November 2026.
The province’s June 25, 2026 announcement said singles with net income up to $126,000, and couples and single parents up to $131,500, would get a July payment. People above those incomes get their full payment in November.
The July and October 2026 payments show up as “PEI Sales Tax Credit” on your bank statement or CRA notice, but they’re the IEB amount. The exact November 2026 date hasn’t been announced yet. From 2027, all IEB payments are to follow the federal government’s regular schedule.
Who qualifies
- You live in Prince Edward Island.
- You’re at least 19 years old.
- You filed a 2025 income tax return.
There’s no income limit. Higher-income Islanders still get the $175 minimum.
How to get it
You don’t apply or register. File your tax return each year and the CRA pays you the same way it pays your other benefits and refunds, by direct deposit or cheque.
The province says no one from government will contact you to sign you up, and you don’t need to give anyone your private details to get it.
What changed in 2026
- July 2026: the IEB replaced the PEI Sales Tax Credit. More people now qualify, since the old credit was income-tested, and most get more money. The old credit paid up to $310 for singles and $365 for couples and single parents, and nothing at higher incomes.
- The federal GST/HST credit was renamed the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit in July 2026. The IEB rides along with it.
- The CRA says the PEI credit will be renamed the “Prince Edward Island essentials benefit” starting in November 2026, so the label on your statement may change.
Payment late, missing or different?
Check the calendar at the top of this page for the July and October dates.
- Wait 10 working days after the payment date, then check CRA My Account.
- If it’s still missing, call the CRA at 1-800-387-1193.
- For questions about the program, call the PEI Department of Finance and Affordability at 902-368-4040.
Common reasons you haven’t seen it:
- You’re in the minimum band, so your only 2026 payment comes in November.
- You didn’t file a 2025 tax return, or filed it late.
- The deposit was labelled “PEI Sales Tax Credit” and was combined with your CGEB.
- Your address or bank details with the CRA are out of date.
Watch for scams. The IEB is automatic. Anyone who texts, emails or calls asking you to “register”, pay a fee, or give banking details or passwords to get it is a scammer.
