What the claim says
Some posts and texts say the “carbon rebate is back,” or that a “final carbon rebate” or “bonus climate payment” is on the way. Others say you have unclaimed carbon rebate money and need to click a link to get it.
What’s actually true
The Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR), which used to be called the Climate Action Incentive Payment, was a tax-free payment to help with the cost of federal carbon pricing.
On March 15, 2025, the government ended the federal fuel charge and the rebate for individuals. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says there are no further quarterly CCR payments after the April 2025 payment.
So there’s no new carbon rebate coming, and no “final” bonus payment.
One thing that is still real
If you were eligible for the CCR but haven’t filed your tax return for 2021, 2022, 2023 or 2024, the CRA says there’s a process to get the payments you missed. You get them by filing your return. You don’t get them through a link in a text.
If the CRA later finds you were overpaid the CCR, it will send you a notice with the amount owing, and it may keep some future refunds or benefit payments until the debt is paid.
Where the confusion comes from
- The rebate was paid four times a year for several years, so many people still expect it.
- People who file old tax returns late can still receive CCR amounts they missed, which can look like a new payment.
- The new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit is also a quarterly CRA payment, around the 5th of the month. It’s easy to confuse the two. See our CGEB guide.
Scam warning
The CRA lists a Canada Carbon Rebate scam on its fraud page. It’s a text or email that claims to be from the CRA, has a link to the “Canada Carbon Rebate,” and may use images copied from Government of Canada social media accounts. Don’t click or reply.
The CRA does not send texts or emails with links about benefits. It doesn’t send payments by e-transfer or text either.
How to check what you’re owed
- Type canada.ca into your browser yourself.
- Sign in to your CRA account.
- Check your benefit and credit payments, and whether any tax returns are missing.
- If you still have questions, call the CRA at 1-800-387-1193.
What to do if you were targeted
- Didn’t click? Delete the message.
- Gave banking details? Call your bank.
- Gave your SIN or CRA sign-in? Call the CRA at 1-833-995-2336 (Monday to Friday, 6:30 am to 7 pm Eastern time).
- If you lost money, report it to your local police and get a file number.
