Is Kindred Actually Free?

Mostly. There’s no membership fee and no hosting fee, and the nights themselves cost credits, not money. But you do pay two things when you’re the guest:

• A cleaning fee, which depends on the size and location of the home.
• A service fee, which varies by trip. You see the exact amount before you confirm a booking.

If you travel a lot, Kindred sells an optional Passport for $600 a year that removes service fees on unlimited trips. Kindred suggests it makes sense if you take more than two trips a year. For most people starting out, I’d skip it until you know how often you’ll actually use the network.

You can’t buy credits. The only ways to get them are hosting, the starter credits and referrals.

Who Can Join Kindred?

• Owners and renters can both join, as long as the home is your primary residence.
• Second homes are allowed, but full-time investment properties aren’t.
• Roommates are fine, but swaps are whole-home only, so everyone who lives there has to be away while a guest stays.

If you rent, check your lease before hosting. Kindred allows renters, but your landlord’s rules still apply.

What If Something Gets Damaged?

Kindred’s damage protection covers up to $100,000 per stay for damage caused by a guest. Every member also has a verified ID, which is a big part of why home swapping on Kindred feels less risky than handing your keys to a stranger.
