The Child Disability Benefit (CDB) is a tax-free monthly payment for families caring for a child under 18 who is approved for the Disability Tax Credit. From July 2026 to June 2027, you can get up to $3,480 a year ($290 a month) for each eligible child. It is paid automatically with your Canada Child Benefit, so there’s no separate payment to track.
How much you can get
The amount depends on your adjusted family net income from 2025. The CRA uses your 2025 tax returns to set payments from July 2026 to June 2027.
| Benefit period | Most you can get per child | Income where it starts to go down |
|---|---|---|
| July 2026 to June 2027 | $3,480 a year ($290.00 a month) | $82,847 adjusted family net income |
If your adjusted family net income is $82,847 or less, you get the full amount. Above that, the benefit is reduced:
| Number of children eligible for the CDB | Yearly reduction |
|---|---|
| One child | 3.2% of family income above $82,847 |
| Two or more children | 5.7% of family income above $82,847 |
Example: a family with one eligible child and an adjusted family net income of $92,847 is $10,000 over the threshold. The reduction is 3.2% of $10,000, or $320. That family would get $3,160 for the year, about $263.33 a month.
The CDB is separate from, and paid on top of, the regular Canada Child Benefit amount. For July 2026 to June 2027, the regular CCB is up to $679.75 a month for a child under 6 and up to $573.58 a month for a child aged 6 to 17, before income reductions.
Who qualifies
You can get the CDB if both of these are true:
- You are eligible for the Canada Child Benefit for the child.
- The child is approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC).
You must stay eligible for the CCB, and your child must stay eligible for the DTC, to keep getting the CDB.
How to get it
There’s no separate application for the CDB. Once the two pieces are in place, the CRA adds it to your CCB automatically.
- Make sure you get the Canada Child Benefit. If you don’t already, apply when you register your baby’s birth, through your CRA account under “Benefits and credits,” or by mailing Form RC66, Canada Child Benefits Application.
- Apply for the DTC for your child. Complete Part A of Form T2201 (the digital form in your CRA account is fastest), and have a medical practitioner complete Part B. Our Disability Tax Credit guide walks through the steps.
- Wait for the decision. The CRA’s goal is to send a notice of determination within eight weeks of receiving the complete form.
- Keep filing your taxes. The CRA uses your family’s tax returns to work out your CCB and CDB each July, so you and your spouse or common-law partner should file every year.
Back payments
If this is the first time you’re getting the CDB, the CRA automatically works out your payments for the current benefit year and the two benefit years before it. For earlier years, send a written request to your tax centre.
When it’s paid
The CDB is included in your Canada Child Benefit payment each month, by direct deposit or cheque. These are the remaining CCB payment dates for 2026:
| Month | Payment date |
|---|---|
| September 2026 | September 18 |
| October 2026 | October 20 |
| November 2026 | November 20 |
| December 2026 | December 11 |
The CRA had not published 2027 dates as of September 2026. See our Canada Child Benefit page and the payment dates this month list for updates.
If a payment doesn’t arrive, wait 10 working days after the payment date before contacting the CRA.
Things to watch for
- The DTC is the key step. Your CCB alone won’t trigger the CDB. It starts only once your child is approved for the DTC, so if your child has a severe and prolonged impairment, it’s worth applying.
- Check for back payments. If your child qualified in earlier years, ask the CRA about years beyond the automatic two.
- Use the current form. Since September 8, 2026, the CRA no longer accepts versions of Form T2201 older than 2023.
- Think ahead to age 18. The CDB stops when the child is no longer eligible for the CCB. An adult with DTC approval may qualify for the Canada Disability Benefit.
- Save the DTC’s other value. DTC approval also lets you open a Registered Disability Savings Plan, where low-income families can get up to $1,000 a year in bonds without contributing.
- Scam warning: you don’t need to pay anyone to apply for the DTC or CDB. The government never asks for payment or gift cards to release a benefit. See our scams guide.

Common questions
How much is the Child Disability Benefit for 2026 to 2027?
Up to $3,480 a year, or $290 a month, per eligible child from July 2026 to June 2027. The full amount goes to families with adjusted family net income of $82,847 or less.
Do I need to apply for the Child Disability Benefit separately?
No. If you get the Canada Child Benefit and your child is approved for the Disability Tax Credit, the CRA adds the CDB to your CCB payments automatically.
When is the Child Disability Benefit paid?
It’s paid with your Canada Child Benefit each month. The remaining 2026 dates are September 18, October 20, November 20 and December 11.
Can I get back pay for the Child Disability Benefit?
Yes. The CRA automatically calculates the current and two previous benefit years when you first get the CDB. For earlier years, send a written request to your tax centre.
Does my income affect the Child Disability Benefit?
Yes. Above $82,847 in adjusted family net income, the benefit goes down by 3.2% of the extra income for one eligible child, or 5.7% for two or more.
What happens to the CDB when my child turns 18?
The CDB is paid with the CCB, which is for children under 18, so it stops then. Your child may be able to apply for the Canada Disability Benefit as an adult.
