The Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit (NLDB) is a monthly payment of up to $400 for adults aged 18 to 64 who have a disability and live in the province. The province pays for it, but the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) runs it and deposits it. There is no application: if you have an approved Disability Tax Credit and you file your taxes, the CRA works out your payment for you.

How much you’ll get

The most you can get is $400 a month, or $4,800 a year. Your amount depends on your adjusted family net income, which is your income plus your spouse’s or common-law partner’s, if you have one. These income limits apply to the benefit year from July 2026 to June 2027.

Your situation (July 2026 to June 2027)Full $400 a month if family income is underPartial payment if family income is between
Single, with the Disability Tax Credit$29,402$29,402 and $42,404
Couple, one of you has the Disability Tax Credit$29,402$29,402 and $42,404
Couple, both of you have the Disability Tax Credit$29,402$29,402 and $55,404

Inside the range, you get a smaller amount that goes down as income rises, and above it the payment stops. The exact reduction formula isn’t published, so check CRA My Account for your own figure.

Example: A single adult in Corner Brook with the Disability Tax Credit and a family net income of $18,000 gets the full $400 a month. If that person also gets the federal Canada Disability Benefit, the two together can add up to $604.20 a month from July 2026 to June 2027 ($400 plus up to $204.20).

Who qualifies

You can get the NLDB if all of these are true:

  • You are 18 to 64 years old.
  • You live in Newfoundland and Labrador on the first day of the payment month.
  • You have a valid, approved Disability Tax Credit (DTC) certificate with the CRA.
  • You filed your income tax return (and so did your spouse or partner, if you have one).
  • Your adjusted family net income is below the limits in the table above.

How to get it

There is no NLDB form. It’s automatic once the CRA has what it needs:

  1. Get the Disability Tax Credit approved. You and a medical practitioner fill out Form T2201 and send it to the CRA. This is the step most people are missing.
  2. File your taxes every year, even if you had little or no income. A spouse or partner must file too.
  3. Set up direct deposit with the CRA, through CRA My Account or your bank, so payments go straight to your account.

Free help with the Disability Tax Credit is available. The Plan Institute’s helpline is 1-844-311-7526 ([email protected]), and Independent Living Nova Scotia also offers DTC navigation help to people in this province, as listed by the Newfoundland and Labrador government.

When it’s paid

The CRA normally pays the NLDB on the 25th of each month. When the 25th falls on a weekend or holiday, it comes on the business day before, and the December payment comes earlier. The calendar at the top of this page shows each date.

What changed in 2026

  • The benefit turned one year old. The first monthly payment went out in July 2025. July 2026 started its second benefit year, with new income limits of $29,402, $42,404 and $55,404.
  • The $400 maximum did not change for July 2026 to June 2027.
  • The Canada Disability Benefit went up to a maximum of $204.20 a month for July 2026 to June 2027, and you can get both benefits at the same time.

The province has also announced a $1,200 yearly deposit into a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) for NLDB-eligible people aged 18 to 49. The province says it is still working on this with the federal government and banks, and it has not said when it will start.

Does it affect Income Support?

No. Since July 2025, people on Newfoundland and Labrador Income Support keep their full Income Support while also getting the NLDB and the Canada Disability Benefit.

Payment late, missing or different?

The CRA asks you to wait 10 working days after the payment date before contacting it about a missing NLDB payment. Then check CRA My Account, or call CRA benefit enquiries at 1-800-387-1193.

Common reasons a payment is missing or smaller than you expected:

  • You or your spouse didn’t file last year’s tax return, or filed it late.
  • Your Disability Tax Credit is no longer approved for the current year.
  • Your family income went up, so you are now in the partial range or above it.
  • You moved or changed banks and didn’t update the CRA.
  • You turned 65.

Watch for scams. The CRA will never ask for a fee to release your benefit, and it never asks for payment by gift card or crypto. Don’t click links in texts or emails that say you have a disability payment waiting. Log in to CRA My Account yourself or call the number above.

Other help you might be missing

  • Canada Disability Benefit: the same Disability Tax Credit opens the door to up to $204.20 a month from July 2026 to June 2027, but you do have to apply for this one.
  • CPP disability benefit: if you worked and paid into the Canada Pension Plan and can’t work regularly because of your disability.
  • Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (formerly the GST/HST credit): paid every three months. The NL Income Supplement is paid with it for lower-income residents.
  • Income Support: if your income can’t cover basic needs, and it won’t claw back your NLDB.
  • Canada Child Benefit: if you have children, including the Child Disability Benefit for a child with the DTC.

Common questions

Do I have to apply for the NL Disability Benefit?

No. If you have an approved Disability Tax Credit and you file your taxes, the CRA checks whether you qualify and pays you automatically.

When is the NL Disability Benefit paid?

Normally on the 25th of each month, or the business day before if the 25th is a weekend or holiday. December’s payment comes earlier. See the calendar at the top of this page.

Do I need to be on Income Support to get the NLDB?

No. The NLDB is based on your age, the Disability Tax Credit and your family income from your tax return. You can get it whether or not you’re on Income Support.

Can I get the NLDB and the Canada Disability Benefit at the same time?

Yes. Many people get both. Together they can add up to $604.20 a month from July 2026 to June 2027, and neither reduces NL Income Support.

Why did my NLDB stop in July?

Each July, the CRA recalculates the benefit using your latest tax return. If you didn’t file, your income went over the limit, or your Disability Tax Credit expired, payments can stop until that’s fixed.

I’m 65. Can I still get it?

No. The NLDB is for people aged 18 to 64. At 65, look into Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement.
