On this page

The Nunavut Senior Citizen Supplementary Benefit (SCSB) is a monthly payment of $300.00 from the Government of Nunavut for low-income seniors. It is for Nunavummiut aged 60 or older who get the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) or the Spouse’s Allowance. Nunavut has an agreement with the federal government, so the SCSB is added automatically to your monthly Old Age Security (OAS) payment.

How much you’ll get

The SCSB is a flat $300.00 a month. The Government of Nunavut’s page doesn’t list different amounts by income.

Amount
Each month$300.00
Over 12 months$3,600.00
Tax slipA T5007 from Income Assistance each tax year

Two examples (July to September 2026)

  • A single senior aged 65 to 74 with no other income could get $751.97 from OAS, up to $1,123.17 from the GIS and $300.00 from the SCSB. That is up to $2,175.14 a month.
  • A 62-year-old whose spouse gets OAS and the GIS could get up to $1,428.06 a month from the federal Allowance, plus the $300.00 SCSB, for up to $1,728.06 a month.

Most people get less than the federal maximums, because the GIS and the Allowance go down as income goes up. The SCSB stays at $300.00 as long as you get one of them.

Who qualifies

  • You live in Nunavut.
  • You are 60 or older.
  • You get the GIS or the Spouse’s Allowance (now called the Allowance) from the federal government.

How to get it

  1. Apply to Service Canada for the GIS or the Allowance. You don’t fill in a separate form for the SCSB.
  2. File your income tax return every year. Your GIS depends on it, and the SCSB depends on your GIS. Filing by April 30 avoids any break in payments.
  3. If you need help reaching Service Canada, ask your support worker or your community’s government liaison officer.

When it’s paid

The SCSB is part of your monthly OAS payment, so it arrives on the same day as OAS. For example, OAS is paid early in December, on December 22, 2026. The calendar at the top of this page has every date.

What changed in 2026

  • The Government of Nunavut’s page still lists the SCSB at $300.00 a month. No change has been announced.
  • For July to September 2026, OAS for ages 65 to 74 is $751.97 a month and the maximum GIS for a single senior is $1,123.17.
  • In July 2026 the GST/HST credit was renamed the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. You still get it by filing your taxes.

Payment late, missing or different?

Payments can take a few days to arrive, and cheques take longer than direct deposit. The federal government asks you to wait 5 to 10 business days before contacting it about an OAS payment. Check with your bank first.

Because the SCSB comes with your OAS payment, call Service Canada at 1-800-277-9914 about a missing payment. You can also ask your community Income Assistance worker. Nunavut lists these Income Assistance regional offices:

  • Kivalliq (Rankin Inlet): 867-645-5040 ext. 1604, or 1-800-953-8516
  • Qikiqtani (Pangnirtung): 867-473-2615 or 867-473-8800, or 1-800-567-1514
  • Kitikmeot (Cambridge Bay): 867-983-4082, or 1-800-661-0845

Common reasons a payment stops or changes:

  • A missed tax return. Without it, your GIS can stop, and the SCSB with it.
  • Higher income. If you no longer qualify for the GIS or the Allowance, the SCSB stops too.
  • A move, a new bank account or a change in marital status. Tell Service Canada so payments aren’t delayed.
  • Time outside Canada. OAS and the GIS may stop if you are away for more than 6 months.

Watch for scams. The government never charges a fee for this benefit, and never asks for gift cards, passwords or banking details by text or email. If you get a message like that, don’t reply. Call Service Canada or your Income Assistance worker instead.

Other help you might be missing

  • Senior Fuel Subsidy (Nunavut): if you are 60 or older and own the home you live in, the Government of Nunavut can pay back the cost of heating fuel, up to 3,500 litres. There is an income test, you must apply every year, and you can’t get it while on social assistance. Your Income Assistance worker can help you apply.
  • Guaranteed Income Supplement: the SCSB depends on it, so apply if you haven’t yet.
  • The Allowance: for people aged 60 to 64 whose spouse gets OAS and the GIS. It also qualifies you for the SCSB.
  • CPP retirement pension: if you ever worked in Canada, make sure you have applied.

Common questions

Do I need to apply for the Nunavut seniors supplement?

No separate application is needed. Apply for the GIS or the Allowance, and the SCSB is added to your OAS payment.

Can I get the SCSB before I turn 65?

Yes, from age 60, if you get the federal Allowance because your spouse gets OAS and the GIS.

Is the SCSB paid on the same day as OAS?

Yes. It is included in your monthly OAS payment.

Will I get a tax slip for the SCSB?

Yes. Income Assistance sends a T5007 slip each tax year. Use it when you file your return.
