Is the Canada Disability Benefit a $2,400 Payment? The Claim Checked

Verdict: Partly true
The Canada Disability Benefit can pay up to about $2,400 a year, but it’s paid monthly, it isn’t automatic, and only people approved for the Disability Tax Credit can get it.

What the claim says

Posts say “the Canada Disability Benefit is paying $2,400” or “people with disabilities are getting $2,400 from the government.” Some make it sound like a lump sum for anyone with a disability. Some link to a site that offers to “apply for you” or check your eligibility.

What’s actually true

The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) is real. It started paying in July 2025. But the $2,400 figure is a yearly maximum, not a single payment.

Benefit yearMaximum per monthMaximum per year
July 2025 to June 2026$200.00$2,400.00
July 2026 to June 2027$204.20$2,450.40

It’s paid every month, on the third Thursday. Many people get less than the maximum, because it goes down as income goes up.

To qualify, you must:

  • be 18 to 64 years old
  • be approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
  • be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
  • have filed your 2025 tax return, and your spouse or partner too, if you have one
  • be a citizen, permanent resident, registered under the Indian Act, a protected person, or a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the past 18 months

How the income test works

For July 2026 to June 2027, the amount starts going down when income is over $23,000 for a single person, or $32,500 for a couple. A single person’s benefit drops by 20 cents for each dollar over the limit. Up to $10,210 of a single person’s work income is not counted ($14,294 for a couple).

You have to apply

The CDB is not automatic. You can apply online, by phone at 1-833-486-3007, or in person at a Service Canada Centre. If you’re approved, your first payment comes on the third Thursday of the next month. It can include back pay for up to 24 months, but not for any month before June 2025.

Where the confusion comes from

  • $200 a month times 12 is $2,400, so the yearly total gets reported as if it were one payment.
  • There’s also a real one-time $150 supplemental payment, which some posts blend in. See our check on the $150 payment.
  • People often don’t know the DTC is required first, so posts make it sound like it’s for anyone with a disability.

Scam warning

The CRA warns about messages that use the Disability Tax Credit’s name, often with a link and a code. It does not send texts or emails about benefits with links. You can apply directly with Service Canada online, by phone or in person, so there’s no need to go through a website that offers to apply for you.
