The tax credit for home-support services for seniors [crédit d’impôt pour maintien à domicile des aînés] pays back part of what Québec residents 70 and older spend on services that help them stay at home. That includes housekeeping, snow removal, help with bathing and part of the rent in many apartments and seniors’ residences. You can claim it once a year on your tax return, or get it in advance payments during the year.
How much you’ll get
The credit is a percentage of your eligible expenses, up to a yearly limit. For the 2025 tax year, the rate was 39%:
| Your situation (2025 tax year) | Yearly limit on eligible expenses | Maximum credit |
|---|---|---|
| Single non-dependent senior | $19,500 | $7,605 |
| Single dependent senior | $25,500 | $9,945 |
| Couple with one dependent and one non-dependent senior | $45,000 | $17,550 |
| Couple of dependent seniors | $51,000 | $19,890 |
A dependent senior needs constant help with personal care, or constant supervision because of a severe and permanent mental disorder such as Alzheimer’s disease. A doctor or specialized nurse practitioner must certify it (form TPZ-1029.MD.A-V).
The credit is reduced when your family income is over $71,010 (2025). The reduction is 3% of the income above that threshold. For non-dependent seniors, a 7% reduction also applies above a second threshold ($115,035 in 2025).
Example: a homeowner. Lise is 78, lives alone in her house and had a family income of $32,000 in 2025. She paid $4,000 for housekeeping and snow removal. Her credit for 2025 is 39% of $4,000, or $1,560.
Example: a tenant. If you live in an apartment building, 5% of your monthly rent counts as eligible expenses. Rent is counted as at least $600 and at most $1,200 a month. Paul pays $1,000 a month, so $50 a month, or $600 for the year, counts. At 39%, his 2025 credit for rent is $234. Revenu Québec can give tenants a credit based on the $600 minimum automatically, but if your rent is higher, it pays to complete Schedule J.
Who qualifies
- You lived in Québec on December 31 of the year.
- You were 70 or older on December 31. If you turned 70 during the year, only services from your 70th birthday on count.
- Your level of autonomy doesn’t matter. It only changes your expense limit.
Eligible services include personal care in your home (dressing, bathing, eating), help preparing meals, meal delivery from a non-profit such as Meals on Wheels, nursing care at home, night supervision, emergency call systems, housekeeping, laundry done in your home, grocery delivery, snow removal, lawn care and window cleaning.
Services don’t count if they’re provided by your spouse or a dependant, if they’re for renovation or repair work, or if they’re provided outside Québec. The cost of supplies and products (food, cleaning products, toiletries) doesn’t count either. You also can’t claim the same expense for this credit and for medical expenses.
How to get it
Once a year: complete Schedule J with your Québec income tax return. The credit is part of your refund. Keep your invoices for six years.
In advance payments:
- Apply in My Account for individuals, or with the form for where you live: TPZ-1029.MD.7-V for services included in your rent, TPZ-1029.MD.8-V for services included in condo fees, and TPZ-1029.MD.9-V for occasional services you pay for yourself.
- Include your lease or invoices.
- Register for direct deposit. Advance payments are only paid that way.
Services included in your rent or condo fees are paid every month. Occasional services are paid within 30 days of an online application, or 45 days for a paper form. You have until December 1 of a year to apply for that year’s advance payments. If both spouses qualify, only one gets the credit for the couple.
You’ll get an RL-19 slip showing the advance payments you received. Enter that amount on your return.
What changed in 2026
The credit rate has gone up one percentage point a year since 2022 and reaches 40% for 2026, up from 39% for 2025. At 40%, Lise’s $4,000 of services would give her $1,600. Revenu Québec hasn’t yet published the 2026 income threshold.
Payment late, missing or different?
Revenu Québec doesn’t publish a set day for monthly advance payments. If a payment you expected hasn’t arrived:
- Check My Account for individuals and your bank.
- For occasional services, allow 30 days after an online application (45 days for paper).
- Call Revenu Québec: 418 659-6299 (Québec City area), 514 864-6299 (Montréal area) or 1 800 267-6299 (toll-free), Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Call Revenu Québec right away if you move, enter a public care facility, separate, or your spouse dies. Your payments change, and telling them early helps you avoid paying back an overpayment.
Revenu Québec never asks for fees, gift cards or passwords by text or email.
Other help you might be missing

- Guaranteed Income Supplement: extra monthly income on top of Old Age Security if your income is low.
- Québec Pension Plan: check that you’ve applied for everything you’re owed.
Common questions
How much is the home-support tax credit in 2026?
The rate is 40% of eligible expenses paid in 2026. For 2025, it was 39%, up to $7,605 for a single senior who isn’t dependent.
Can I get the credit if I rent an apartment?
Yes. If you’re 70 or older and rent in an apartment building, 5% of your rent counts, with rent treated as between $600 and $1,200 a month. Services you pay for separately, like housekeeping, can count too.
Do I need to be losing my autonomy?
No. Anyone 70 or older who lives in Québec can claim it. Dependent seniors just have a higher yearly limit.
Does a cleaning person I pay in cash count?
The service must be from a business or a person who gives you an invoice. Keep the invoices, because Revenu Québec can ask for them.
