Features Of The RBC Cash Back Mastercard

#1 Earn 2% Cash Back On Groceries And 0.5% On All Other Purchases

With the RBC Cash Back Mastercard, you can earn unlimited cash back whenever you purchase groceries or stop by any of their partner stores. You won't earn as much as you would with a premium cash back credit card, but still, 2% cash back on groceries and 0.5% on all other purchases is reasonable for a no-fee card. Here’s the breakdown of what you will earn with the RBC Cash Back Mastercard:

  • 2% cash back on groceries (for up to $6,000 spent in a year)
  • 1% cash back on groceries after reaching the limit
  • 0.5% cash back on all other purchases

Keep in mind the 2% cash back on groceries applies only for the first $6,000 you spend on a given year – that is $120 cash back. After that, you'll earn 1% cash back on groceries, and there is no limit on how much cash back you can earn.

#2 No Annual Fee

The RBC Cash Back Mastercard doesn’t charge annual fees, which makes it an excellent entry-level card for beginners looking for their first no-fee cash back credit card. To apply for this card you only need to meet two requirements:

  1. You must be a Canadian Resident of at least the age of majority in the province where you reside. In Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan, the age of majority is 18. In all other provinces, the age of the majority is 19.
  2. Fill in their digital form. You will need to provide personal and background information, including your name, address, phone number, and email address.

Bonus Petro-Points are credited to your account within 2 business days. If you want to redeem your Petro-Points at Petro-Canada, you can use your linked RBC card.

While, like most good cash back cards, this is a free credit card, it lacks many perks and features to make it a truly compelling card. When considering the best cards in the Canadian market, it's usually better to pay an annual fee in exchange for great bonuses and additional perks that can save you hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars down the line. This is the case with premium options like the Amex Platinum but also with less expensive cards like the Cobalt, the Gold Card and the American Express Marriott Bonvoy card.

That said, these cards require a high credit score, so you may have to start lower with cards like the CT Triangle Mastercard, which are much cheaper (free even) but reward you handsomely.
